A cheaper grocery store is worth the drive only when the savings on the same basket exceed the extra fuel, fees, and time. That’s the entire decision. The store sign doesn’t get a vote.

The $18 headline survived as $4.33. Still a win, but considerably less parade-worthy.
How do you compare two grocery stores fairly?
Start with the same basket. Same foods, same quantities, same level of convenience.
This is where most store comparisons wander into the woods. Someone spends $120 at one store, then spends $70 at another after replacing fresh salmon with frozen fish, steak with chicken thighs, and six snack boxes with a bag of popcorn. The second trip may be smarter, but it didn’t prove the store saved $50. It proved the shopper changed both the store and the food.
Separate those two effects:
- Store effect: What would identical products and quantities cost at each store?
- Food-swap effect: What did you save by buying different foods or brands?

What travel costs should you include?
Count only the extra cost caused by choosing the farther store.
If the cheap store adds 12 miles to a trip you were making anyway, enter 12 miles. Don’t charge it for the entire drive from home, across town, past the hardware store, and back through the drive-through. That’s not accounting. That’s framing a grocery store.
For a car trip, the cash formula is straightforward:
extra miles / miles per gallon x gas price + tolls + parking
If you use public transit, enter zero miles and put the extra fare in the fees field. If the trip requires a rideshare, use the extra fare as the travel cost. The calculator doesn’t care whether the money went into a gas tank or an app with a tiny animated car.
Maintenance and depreciation are real, but they’re harder to estimate for one grocery run. If you already track a per-mile vehicle cost, put the difference into the fees field. If you don’t, fuel plus direct fees gives you a useful cash comparison without pretending we know the exact emotional state of your transmission.
Should your travel time count too?
Sometimes. Not always.
If you enjoy the farther store, combine the trip with another errand, or shop at a time that would’ve otherwise disappeared into scrolling, set time to $0. Cash savings are cash savings.
But if the detour eats an hour every Saturday, time belongs in the decision. Give it whatever hourly value makes sense to you. This isn’t a declaration that every minute of your life must be monetized. Nobody needs a quarterly earnings call for buying oats. It’s a way to see why a small discount may not justify a large detour.
Run both numbers. If the store saves $14 in cash but only $1 after time, you know exactly what you’re trading.
How big does the basket need to be?
The farther store usually gets more attractive as the basket grows, assuming the price advantage applies to the foods you’re actually buying.
A $2 difference on one bag of rice won’t carry a 30-mile trip. A $25 difference across a two-week cart might. This is why comparing one flashy sale item tells you almost nothing about the full trip.

When does the farther store clearly win?
It tends to win when several things line up:
- You shop for one or two weeks at a time.
- The foods you buy repeatedly are genuinely cheaper there.
- You can combine the trip with another errand.
- You buy shelf-stable or freezable staples, so the larger shop doesn’t create waste.
- The route adds little time, fuel, or frustration.
It tends to lose when you make frequent small trips, chase one sale, buy more because the store feels cheap, or bring home aspirational vegetables that nobody has agreed to eat.
The honest answer isn’t “always drive to the cheapest store.” It’s “price the basket, price the trip, and let the difference decide.” Five fields take less time than arguing with yourself in the parking lot.
