A pot of pinto beans and brown rice feeds four for about $1.52, which is $0.38 a person and 23.8 grams of protein each. Every dinner in this article feeds a family of four for under $4. Not under $10. Under $4, at July 2026 store prices.
The under-$10 family dinner is the standard promise online, and honestly it’s a low bar once you know where the value sits. What follows is priced by the pot, because that’s how you actually cook when four people are waiting.

What are cheap dinner ideas for a family of 4 under $10?
All of them, with room left over. The most expensive pot on that list is $3.76, and it’s the one with meat in it.
That gap is the whole lesson. A four pound bag of dry pinto beans costs $3.97 and holds about twenty servings, so a bag covers five family dinners of beans for less than one pound of ground beef. Beef ran $6.75 a pound and returned 11.5 grams of protein per dollar against 97.9 for the pintos, a spread we measured across 49 foods in the protein per dollar ranking.
So the practical shortlist for a family week looks like this. One bean pot, one lentil pot, one pasta night, one chicken night. Four pots, roughly $10 total, and nobody eats the same thing twice. The same plates costed per person sit in cheap dinner ideas, and the pots that reheat best are in cheap healthy meals with leftovers. Cooking dried beans from scratch is the only skill involved, and it’s mostly waiting.
Which cheap family dinner gives the most protein?
Drumsticks, and it isn’t close. Bone-in drumsticks returned 50.3 grams of protein per dollar, which is more than double chicken breast, so a $3.76 pot lands at 37.8 grams a serving.
People assume the cheap cut is the compromise. It’s the opposite. We ranked eleven cuts in the cheapest meat for protein and boneless skinless breast finished sixth. Drumsticks won by a mile, and a family that likes drumsticks is a family with a much easier grocery bill.
Pasta with two cans of black beans is the runner up at 29.0 grams a serving for $2.94. Canned beans cost about 2.7 times more per gram than the same bean dry, but a can is $0.88 and needs no planning, which on a Wednesday is worth something.
How do you feed 5 or 6 without the price jumping?
Scale the pot, not the menu. Ingredients cost the same per gram whether you cook four portions or six, so the beans and rice pot goes from $1.52 to about $2.28 for six. That’s seventy-six cents, not a new budget line.
The jump only feels violent when the anchor is meat, because meat is where the per gram price is highest. A meat-anchored dinner for six costs half again as much as one for four in real money that you notice. A bean-anchored one doesn’t.
Bigger families also get the bulk advantage on packages that small households can’t use up. A four pound bag of pintos is a burden for one person and an obvious buy for six. There’s more of that logic in how to stretch meals for large families, and cheap crockpot meals for large families covers the hands-off version.
What do you do about the kid who won’t eat beans?
Change the shape, not the budget. Beans in a bowl of soup are a hard sell. The same beans mashed into a taco, blended into a smooth soup, or hidden under cheese and rice are a different negotiation entirely.
The slaw line matters here too. Cabbage is $0.78 a pound and adds crunch, which is the texture most kids are actually objecting to when they say they don’t like something soft. Carrots at $1.58 for two pounds do the same job raw.
If you want dinners built around this problem specifically, high fiber dinner recipes for picky kids is the version with recipes attached, and a pot of three bean chili tends to survive contact with a skeptical table.
What these pot prices leave out
Single store shelf prices from July 2026, plus US average prices for beef, eggs, and a few commodity items. Oil, salt, and spices aren’t priced. Neither are calories, because our datasets don’t carry a calorie column, so nothing here tells you whether a serving is the right size for a teenager.
Portions are also an argument, not a fact. We used 90 grams of dry legume and 60 grams of dry grain per adult serving. A hungry fifteen year old will eat more than that, and the fix costs pennies because the anchors are cheap.
For the benchmark your whole family grocery bill should sit against, what USDA says a family of four spends has the official weekly number, and the eat healthy on a budget playbook turns these pots into a shopping system.
