The cheapest real dinner in our price data is split pea soup at about $0.28 a serving, and pinto beans with brown rice sits right behind it at $0.32 with 23.8 grams of protein on the plate. Most cheap dinner ideas lists never tell you what a plate costs. So we priced ten of them.
Every number below comes from the same two datasets this site runs on: USDA nutrition joined to dated US store prices. Nobody publishes cost per gram of protein, so we built it. Here’s what that looks like when you turn it back into dinner.
| Dinner | What’s in one serving | Cost | Protein | Fiber |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Split pea soup | 90 g dry split peas | $0.28 | 20.8 g | 20.0 g |
| Pinto beans and brown rice | 90 g dry pinto, 60 g dry brown rice | $0.32 | 23.8 g | 16.1 g |
| Black bean tacos | 90 g dry black beans, cabbage slaw | $0.41 | 19.4 g | 16.4 g |
| Barley bowl with an egg | 60 g barley, frozen broccoli, 1 egg | $0.66 | 12.2 g | 12.4 g |
| Navy bean stew | 90 g navy beans, carrot, onion | $0.56 | 20.1 g | 17.4 g |
| Lentil soup | 90 g brown lentils, carrot, onion | $0.58 | 22.2 g | 13.3 g |
| Pasta with black beans | 100 g whole wheat spaghetti, half a can of beans | $0.70 | 27.1 g | 21.5 g |
| Drumsticks, rice, peas | 200 g drumsticks, 60 g rice, 120 g peas | $0.88 | 34.8 g | 5.4 g |

What are some cheap dinner ideas that are actually cheap?
The ones with a dry legume doing the heavy lifting. That’s the whole trick, and it’s boring, and it works.
Look at the top of the table and the bottom. Same shape of plate, same amount of protein, and the price moves by more than six times. It isn’t the vegetables doing that. A 16 ounce bag of green split peas costs $1.42 and makes five dinners at $0.28 each. A pound of 80/20 ground beef costs $6.75 and gives you 11.5 grams of protein per dollar, which is the worst return in our whole protein per dollar ranking.
So the shortlist writes itself. Split pea soup. Beans and rice. Black bean tacos. Lentil soup. A pot of navy beans with carrots. None of these need a recipe you’d bookmark, just the three slot plate rule, and all cost less than a drive-through side.
If dry beans feel like a commitment, they mostly aren’t. Cooking dried beans from scratch is about four minutes of work and a lot of waiting, and there’s a same day quick soak for the nights you forgot.
What are good cheap dinner ideas under $10 for a family?
Almost all of them, once you scale the pot. Cooking four servings of pinto beans and brown rice priced out at $1.52 for the whole pot. Black bean tacos for four came to $2.00. A pot of lentil soup for four ran $2.02, and drumsticks with rice and frozen peas hit $3.76.
That last one matters if your table wants meat. Bone-in drumsticks returned 50.3 grams of protein per dollar, double what boneless breast returns, which we broke down in chicken thighs versus breast. The cheap cut isn’t a compromise. It’s just less photogenic. Canned beans are the softer spot, costing roughly 2.7 times more per gram of protein than the identical bean dry.
Do cheap dinner ideas have to be beans every night?
No, and if you try that you’ll quit by Thursday. I’ve done it. Week three of pinto beans is where good intentions go to die.
The fix isn’t a more expensive anchor, it’s a rotation. Split peas Monday, black beans Wednesday, lentils Friday, drumsticks Saturday. Four different anchors, four different flavor directions, and the weekly total barely moves. A pot of three bean chili and a night of lentil curry taste nothing alike even though the receipt looks the same.
Then let one dinner a week be the expensive one on purpose. At $1.88 a serving the ground beef night is still cheaper than anything you’d order, and budgets that allow zero indulgence collapse by Sunday.
What makes a cheap dinner feel like a meal?
Texture and acid, mostly. A bowl of beans is a bowl of beans until you put something crunchy and something sharp on it.
Cabbage is the cheapest crunch in the produce aisle at $0.78 a pound, which is why the taco line in that table includes a slaw and still costs $0.41. Carrots run $1.58 for a two pound bag. A squeeze of lime, a spoon of yogurt, hot sauce, raw onion, toasted seeds on top. None of that moves the price much and all of it moves the plate.
Frozen vegetables do the same job with no prep and no spoilage risk. Frozen green peas came in at 17.6 grams of fiber per dollar, better than every fresh fruit we priced. If you cook for a household, cheap dinner ideas for a family of 4 prices the same plates by the pot, and cheap healthy meals for two deals with the package problem.
What this price list does not cover
Fair warning on what these numbers are. They’re single store shelf prices from July 2026, with US average prices for commodity items like eggs, milk, and beef. Your zip code will differ. The order of the list is the durable part, not the exact cents.
We don’t price oil, salt, or spices, and we publish no calorie figures because our datasets carry no calorie column. Read the table as a comparison between dinners, not a nutrition label.
What it does tell you is where the money goes. Pick your anchor first, and the rest of dinner is rounding. For the full week around these plates, the eat healthy on a budget playbook puts the same numbers to work across a whole cart.
